On 30 December 2024, a kick-off event for the project was held and was joined by representatives of the relevant government department and working partners to witness the start of a significant new chapter in the expansion of the MTR railway network.

Mr Alan Yan, Head of Project Delivery of MTR Corporation (3rd left); Mr Ngai Hon-wah, JP, Commissioner for Northern Metropolis Railways of Highways Department (3rd right); Mr Walter Lam, Head of Construction Management of MTR Corporation (2nd right); Mr Rex Wong, JP, Chairman & CEO of Kum Shing Group (2nd left); Mr Lam Yu-chau, Government Engineer / Railway Development (1) of Highways Department (1st right); and Mr CK Fong, Senior Construction Manager of MTR Corporation (1st left) officiated at the Kick-off Event to celebrate the commencement of the Tuen Ma Line Hung Shui Kiu Station project.

“HSK is the first station to be built by the MTR Corporation on an operating railway viaduct. While pushing forward the project, the Corporation has to ensure the safety of railway operations and minimise any impact on train services. The team will continuously embrace innovative thinking, new technologies, and techniques in project management to cope with time constraints and other construction challenges. The Corporation will strive to ensure that the project proceeds as planned. I hope that the team together with the contractor will uphold this objective while bringing the project to fruition in order to promote regional development and build a brighter future for the community,” said Mr Alan Yan, Head of Project Delivery of MTR Corporation.

“In 2021, the Government proposed the development of the Northern Metropolis, positioning the Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area as a high-end professional services hub, providing not less than 2 million square metres of commercial floor area. A number of commercial and commercial/residential sites are planned adjacent to  HSK Station at the city centre, and it is anticipated that there will be up to 226,000 future population in the New Development Area. The opening of  HSK Station in 2030 will unleash the development potential of the Northern Metropolis and become a key element for the successful development of the area,” said Mr Ngai Hon-wah, JP, Commissioner for Northern Metropolis Railways of Highways Department.

The MTR Corporation has started a series of preparation works on the Tuen Ma Line viaduct progressively since 2023. One of the most challenging works is the removal of parapet walls on the viaduct, for which the works on the down-track have been completed, while the works on up-track have commenced in December 2024.

To ensure the smooth commencement of the main construction works for Hung Shui Kiu Station, a series of alterations and additions works have commenced on a 200-metre-long viaduct between Tin Shui Wai Station and Siu Hong Station. One of the critical preparation works is the cutting and removal of concrete parapets along the viaduct that will be converted into a station in the future, so as to make space for assembly of the platform and other structures for the future station.

To ensure these works will be conducted safely without affecting daily train operations, the majority of the works have to be done during the “Golden 2 Hours” during non-traffic hours.
