Why Mega Skidding

Method Icon 1

Reduces potential service impact caused by construction works on Tuen Ma Line

Method Icon 2

Manages and reduces the safety risks associated with working on an operating viaduct

Method Icon 3

Enhances construction efficiency beyond the constraints of the “Golden Two Hours” work window

Innovation and Technology

The Hung Shui Kiu Station is to be built on an operating railway viaduct, with both narrow physical space and time window for construction. To mitigate the potential risk and service impact caused by construction works on the Tuen Ma Line, the project team has proactively applied innovative thinking and advanced technologies. Following a comprehensive review and benchmarking of proven and effective construction solutions worldwide, the team has identified and adopted the optimal construction method – Mega Skidding.

Project Status

Foundation works are currently underway

To facilitate the station construction works, site formation works have been completed, and station foundation works are currently advancing at full speed.

Transportation of Prefabricated Components from Factory to Worksite for Assembly

Prefabricated components for the station structure are being progressively manufactured in the factory and transported to the work site in phases for off-site assembly.

Parapet Removal from the Viaduct Completed

A total of 140 parapet sections on the Tuen Ma Line viaduct, weighing approximately 350 tons in total, have been successfully removed without affecting Tuen Ma Line service. The works were carried out during the “Golden Two Hours” of non-traffic hours to make space for connecting the station’s main structure.

Modification of Overlaps of the Overhead Line Completed

To facilitate the construction of Hung Shui Kiu Station, modification works on the overhead line have been completed. These works included relocating the overlaps on the overhead line, laying new cables, installing new balance weight assemblies, and extending the newly installed overhead line section from approximately 1,500 metres to over 1,700 metres. This makes it the longest stretch of overhead line on the Tuen Ma Line.

Environment

The Corporation attaches great importance to environmental protection throughout the design and construction of railway projects. Every effort is to minimise the project’s impact on the surrounding environment while ensuring compliance with relevant statutory requirements.

During construction, regular monitoring such as noise and air quality monitoring will be conducted in the vicinity of the works sites to ensure compliance with relevant environmental requirements.
